XServer's 2024 Year in Review
Most of what we accomplished during the year went unnoticed by our clients. But in the spring, one of the most significant events took place – we opened a new site for virtual servers in Germany. This location, as expected, turned out to be very popular among both existing and new clients.
It was here that we first offered Dell R340 dedicated servers for rent, which our clients came to appreciate for their low cost combined with quite high performance.
Summer
Relocation in Ukraine
The largest volume of work was carried out in June–July of the outgoing year. During this time, we moved servers from our first and largest location in Kharkiv to a new data center in Kyiv.
To make this transition as smooth as possible, an L2 tunnel was organized between the data centers, thanks to which VPS clients did not experience a single second of downtime.
Server upgrades
We also delighted dedicated server tenants with free upgrades from old servers that had been running for more than 10 years to modern HP and Dell servers.
Most clients at this site have been with us almost since the very beginning, when we were still selling self-built servers assembled from desktop components. Nevertheless, they deserve credit for such long uninterrupted service!
We also carried out the migration of data from dedicated servers using our own “life hacks,” tested in advance under lab conditions. As a result, downtime during migration was only between 10 minutes and a few hours, depending on the amount of stored data.
Equipment upgrades
Although the relocation was quite labor-intensive, it allowed us to get rid of much outdated equipment, such as external IP-KVMs and 100-megabit switches. The network core in the Kyiv data center is now based on a fault-tolerant CISCO cluster, just like in all new locations.
Autumn
After a hot summer, both literally and figuratively, came an equally intense autumn. It so happened that we had to work simultaneously on opening a new site in the United Kingdom and upgrading the existing one in the Netherlands.
United Kingdom
The new London location provides clients with excellent connectivity both within Europe and with the USA. Both virtual and dedicated servers are immediately available for rent here, along with all of our additional services.
This now gives our clients an even wider choice for the geographic distribution of their servers.
Netherlands
To provide even higher quality services at the same affordable prices, it was also necessary to upgrade our location in the Netherlands. As it is the second most popular among our clients, we are doubling the internet bandwidth and adding additional internet providers to ensure even better global connectivity.
Here, all the work carried out was even less noticeable to clients than during the relocation in Ukraine. 90% of the work has already been completed, with finalization planned for early 2025.
Winter
At the moment, we are preparing for the renovation of the Bulgarian site. Here, too, the network core will be upgraded, new higher-performance storage for virtual servers will be installed, and additional internet providers will be connected to expand bandwidth and improve reliability.
